Andretti Autosport and Bryan Herta Autosport have both announced additions to their Firestone Indy Lights teams ahead of next weekend's season opener in St. Petersburg.
Andretti Autosport has signed Carlos Muñoz, a Colombian native who will drive the No. 26 Dialy-Ser Firestone Indy Lights entry. The 20-year-old began his motorsports career in karting in 2002. In 2007, he made his debut in single-seaters, racing in the Formula TR Pro Series. He took one podium in four races, ending the season in eighth place.
In 2008, Muñoz participated in the Italian Formula Renault 2.0 and Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 Championships, racing for Prema Powerteam. The following season, Muñoz competed in both the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 and Formula Renault 2.0 West European Cup championships for Epsilon Euskadi. He finished eighth in the Eurocup standings, including a podium in the second race at the Nurburgring. In the West European Cup, he took seventh place in the championship, scoring two podium places. He has also competed in the F3 Euroseries with Signature Team in 2010 and 2011.
Meanwhile, Bryan Herta Autosport with Curb-Agajanian announced that 22-year-old Troy Castaneda will drive its No. 28 entry in the season opener at St. Petersburg. The car will feature sponsorship from Forsythe Solutions Group, EMC, Barracuda Networks, and Bariani Olive Oil.
American Castaneda has competed in a variety of karting and racing series around the world. In 2009 and 2010, he joined Team USA at the Rotax World Finals in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt. He qualified the highest out of any American in the history of the event.
In 2011, Castaneda raced at Laguna Seca in a Formula Enterprise car, winning by almost 40 seconds and breaking the track record by half a second. He has also been testing an RCR Superlite Eagle Prototype and a Radical sports racer, in addition to being the official test driver for M&R Motorsports at Infineon Raceway. His successful record on track makes him a great fit for the Bryan Herta Autosport Firestone Indy Lights squad.
The Firestone Indy Lights season opener will take place on Saturday, March 24 at 5 p.m. ET, and will be broadcast on Thursday, March 29 at 5 p.m. ET on NBC Sports Network (formerly Versus).
