Fresh off a six-hour endurance test at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, there's very limited time off for American Le Mans Series teams and drivers before moving into Atlanta for Petit Le Mans.
Before they arrive at Road Atlanta, a substantial number of teams will participate in Motorsports on Main presented by Michelin, held this Thursday in downtown Greenville, S.C., from 1 to 9 p.m. ET. Several streets are blocked off for team and car displays and driver appearances. The family friendly atmosphere drew more than 12,000 fans last year after only being confirmed to happen six weeks in advance of its actual date.
“Motorsports on Main is the perfect opportunity for the community to celebrate the great technology being developed in the Upstate that contributes to such a relevant racing platform as the American Le Mans Series,” said Silvia Mammone, Michelin motorsports manager. “And with one of the biggest races in the world taking place just 90 miles down the road the following week, there will be a lot for fans to get excited about.”
For 2011, the event has shifted in-between Monterey and Petit Le Mans as the precursor to Petit, and features several additions from the inaugural event.
New items include an expanded kid's zone, a food and beverage zone, race simulators, tech talks and driver autograph sessions, plus the 24 Hours of Le Mans-winning GT Corvette and driver Tommy Milner, and Flying Lizard's stunning one-off livery at this year's race as designed by Troy Lee.
Newly crowned ALMS GT champions BMW will be back not far from their North American base, with driver Bill Auberlen as part of BMW's Heritage display.
Muscle Milk Aston Martin Racing makes its second appearance but first with its Lola Aston Martin coupe. The team is also featuring its Mighty Milk product, a children's version of its Muscle Milk brand.
