More records fall on day two of SCCA Runoffs qualifying
Eleven track records were set on the second day of qualifying at the SCCA National Championship Runoffs during a day of improved weather at Road America.
Among the 28 classes, the quickest time of the day was laid down by Steve Forrer, of Milwaukee, Wis., in his C Sports Racing No. 84 K-Hill Motorsports/Hoosier/Forrer Supply Ralt RT-41/Toyota. Forrer's lap of 2:01.135 (118.876mph) is the quickest official lap ever turned by an SCCA Club Racer at the four-mile track.
Chasing the C Sports Racing time is the Formula Atlantic class, where Keith Grant, of Germantown, Tenn., topped the class with a 2:01.549 (118.471mph) in the No. 40 Hoosier/Hasselgren/Polestar Swift 014a Toyota.
The closest competition for pole position, which will be set on Thursday in every class, came in Formula 500. The class went out in the rain on Monday, but hometown favorite Michael Mueller, from nearby Plymouth, topped the class on Tuesday with a time of 2:23.053 (108.228mph) in the No. 24 MJ Manufacturing/Fibeco/HRP/Subway Red Devil. Mueller needed all of that time, finishing just 0.023sec ahead of Michael Brent, of Bethel, Conn., in the No. 47 Hoosier Tire/QRE Invader QC-1.
Michael Varacins, Revere Greist, and Cliff Ebben are three other Wisconsin-natives on provisional poles in their respective classes. Varacins, of Burlington, topped Formula Vee with a time of 2:41.774 (89.013mph) in his No. 65 Speed Sport/Veetech/Hoosier Speed Sport AM-5. Greist, of Madison, led Formula Continental in the No. 56 Waypoint Health Innovations/Arms Up Van Diemen DP07/Ford with a new class qualifying record of 2:11.321 (109.655mph). Appleton-native Ebben topped the GT-1 class on Tuesday, but his time from Monday was quicker and still leaves him on the provisional pole.
Qualifying continues for all 28 classes Wednesday and Thursday, with the best lap of the week setting the pole position for this weekend's races.
