Audi has lost the lead of the Petit Le Mans for the first time bar pit stops after Allan McNish spun under yellow four hours into the race.
McNish had been fending off a strong challenge from Peugeot since the outset, and was trying to keep his tyres warm as drizzle fell during a long yellow to tidy up the Autocon Lola's crash at Turn 1. The Audi rotated as it accelerated up the hill out of Turn 5 and was briefly beached on a curb, but was able to rejoin further down the safety car queue and still in third place.
The incident means that Stephane Sarrazin will lead Peugeot team-mate Pedro Lamy when the race restarts - Sarrazin and Franck Montagny's #08 car having unlapped itself from the Audi during the previous stint and then got back to the front when pit stops took place under the current yellow.
