Allan McNish is expected to go to a local hospital for scans after initial checks suggest the Scot is unhurt following his massive accident on the 15th lap of the 2011 Le Mans 24 Hours.

The Audi driver's No. 3 R18 TDI clipped the rear of Anthony Beltoise's Luxury Racing Ferrari 458 GTE car and spun into the gravel before cartwheeling along the top of the barriers at the right-hander after the Dunlop Bridge. McNish climbed from the car, assisted by marshals, but was taken for checks with Audi's own doctors.

"He's OK," said an Audi spokesperson. "He's with the medical staff here. The Audi team doctor has looked at him and basically it is likely that he will go to a local hospital for a further scan just to make sure everything is all right."

Asked how he was in spirit, the spokesperson replied: "He's fine. He's more upset about having to retire form the race in the opening hour. He's gutted, really gutted, but he's fine."
