If plunging down a five and a half story drop on two wheels sounds like a good time, then you will want to attend one of the monthly Twilight Cycling rides, presented by Rabobank at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
The family and enthusiast oriented Twilight Rides evenings are open to all levels of cyclists who are looking for a world-class challenge. No matter your ability, all riders can experience the thrill of being on the 11-turn, 2.238-mile world-famous racetrack that is normally reserved for motorcycles and racecars.
Each month is hosted by a different local cycling club, organization or business and it is a wonderful and healthy way to meet fellow cyclists and perhaps engage in some friendly competition. The Twilight Cycling concept was created five years ago by Ann Bixler, vp of operations for Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, who is an avid cyclist.
“Hundreds of bicyclists join us on the track each year,” says Bixler. “We hear riders especially enjoy the rides that are held in conjunction with one of our major motorsports races. These evenings allow them to be a part of the race action that's in the paddock and a chance to ride alongside famous racers.”
The 2013 schedule includes several race week events when the paddock is bustling with activity. The dates are Jan. 16; Feb. 13; March 13; April 10; May 15; June 12; July 10; Aug. 13; Sept. 5; Oct. 16; Nov. 13 and Dec. 11. Dates are subject to change based on inclement weather.
The cost is only $10 per rider and each event is ongoing from 5:30-7:30 p.m., depending on available daylight. Helmets are required.
