Audi's Lucas Luhr suffered a dramatic high-speed crash on the way in to the Porsche Curves and embedded his #2 Audi R15 in the tire barrier.
Luhr was running in third place when he lost control at the beginning of the complex and spun backwards, smashing the rear end of his car against the barrier and deranging the rear suspension. The car looked as though it might have suffered a mechanical failure at the front as Luhr turned into the right-hander.
He initially remained in the cockpit as the R15 was towed out, attempting to get the car back to the pits.
"I think the car could make it," says Audi's Dr Wolfgang Ullrich. "We have at present no clue [what happened]. We would prefer to get the car back if possible."
Luhr has since walked away from the car, which appears to be headed into retirement.
