Lotus has become the first car manufacturer to step up and declare it will build an aerodynamic package for the next-generation Dallara IndyCar Series car in 2012, this week's AUTOSPORT magazine confirms.

"We plan to do our own body kit,” says Lotus Cars motorsport director Claudio Berro. “It is a natural evolution of our involvement in the IZOD IndyCar Series."

The historic British brand, which won the Indianapolis 500 in 1965 and '66, is already giving the KV Racing Technology team financial backing and technical assistance for this year's IndyCar Series.

It now plans to take advantage of the rule that allows teams to develop their own aerodynamic pieces such as sidepods, rear bodywork and wings for the new Dallara chassis that will arrive in 2012.
