Former grand prix driver JJ Lehto was injured in a boating accident early on Friday morning, Finnish media has reported.

The 44-year-old Finn, who won the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1995 and 2005 was reportedly thrown out of the small boat he was traveling in when it struck a bridge support.

Lehto suffered head injuries and broken ribs but was able to swim to shore, although a friend who had been traveling with him was reportedly killed in the accident.
