Bobby Rahal's Legends of Motorsports group has announced a contemporary opportunity for participants in the 2011 season with an all-new GT 2000 category and a more inclusive GTP/Group C category.
The new GT 2000 category will be home to factory-prepared cars from 2000 to the present, driven by some of the racing world's most accomplished racers. The lineup of cars has been featured at famous tracks and endurance racing events, competing in such series as FIA GT, Grand-Am, ALMS, Porsche Cup, and Ferrari Challenge.
“In speaking with racers and participants around the country last season, we heard several requests among our competitors for a category of this caliber,” said Rahal. “This category will see Ferraris, Porsches and Lamborghinis competing against each other which will add a new level of competition to our events and make a great show for the fans.”
The GT 2000 category makes its debut at Barber Motorsports Park May 20-22. Additionally, the existing GTP category is expanding to include GTP cars from 1994 to present providing racing opportunities for these very historic and well known cars. A complete list of eligible makes and models can be found here.
“Our series is committed to providing an exciting and competitive racing experience for both drivers and spectators,” said Rena Shanaman, president of Legends of Motorsports. “These contemporary cars with their great history in international endurance racing will blend well with our historic cars, having raced at some of the same iconic venues like Le Mans, Sebring and Daytona.”
Legends of Motorsports events for the 2011 season include Barber Motorsports Park (May 20-22), Circuit Mont-Tremblant (July 8-10) and Sebring International Raceway (Dec. 2-4).
