The IZOD IndyCar World Championship at Las Vegas has been red-flagged following a multi-car accident that took place through 12 of 200 laps.

More than a dozen cars were involved, several flew and some were reduced to charred remains after fires.

Dan Wheldon was the most seriously involved – he has been airlifted to a nearby hospital – while Pippa Mann and JR Hildebrand were transported via ground.

Will Power was involved and has thus been eliminated from championship contention. Power also was subsequently transported to the medical center after complaining of lower back pain.Also sidelined was Hildebrand, who trailed James Hinchcliffe by six points for rookie-of-the-year honors.

Others involved include: Wade Cunningham, Townsend Bell, Jay Howard, Tomas Scheckter, Charlie Kimball, Paul Tracy, EJ Viso, Alex Lloyd and Buddy Rice.

Polesitter Tony Kanaan leads Ed Carpenter, Ryan Briscoe, Marco Andretti and Oriol Servia when the race restarts.
