LAKEVILLE, Conn. (May 26, 2007) – Pierre Kleinubing, of Coconut Creek, Fla., collected his first SCCA Pro Racing SPEED Touring Car pole of the season for Monday’s Round Three race at Lime Rock Park. Chip Herr, of Lititz, Pa., will start outside the front row.
Driving the No. 1 Acura Certified Pre-Owned/RealTime Acura TSX, the defending series Champion broke the Mazda qualifying streak with a time of 58.153 (94.715 mph) around the 1.53-mile track. The pole is the second for Kleinubing at Lime Rock Park and his record 31st career pole.
“I felt like [the TriPoint Mazdas] were my teammates today,” Kleinubing said of his lap. “You can try to plan something for qualifying, but it never works. But that’s what they did for me. Jeff [Altenburg] moved over after the uphill and then it was Randy [Pobst] right ahead of me. I caught him up a little bit in West Bend, the Downhill and the front straightaway. I was just watching my dash, with my splits getting better and better as I’m drafting them. That was my lap right there.”
Kleinubing brushed off any worries about starting alongside the all-wheel drive Audi A4 of Herr.
“I’ll be on the inside so he needs to be pretty far clear of me to get the advantage. I think we’ll be all right. We race really well and I think my car will be really good on a long run.”
Herr put in his best qualifying effort of the season. The No. 17 STaSIS/Clear Capital Audi A4 will start Monday’s race on the outside the first row after putting in a time of 58.392 (94.328 mph).
After pacing both practice session at Lime Rock Park, Jeff Altenburg, of Ellicott City, Md., lost over 0.1-second in qualifying to put his No. 72 Mazdaspeed Motorsports Development Mazda 6 third on the grid with a time of 58.427 (94.271 mph). Altenburg had won both previous poles and races in 2007.
The No. 29 Global Motorsports Group BMW 325Ci of James Sofronas, from Newport Beach, Calif., clocked a fast time of 58.488 (94.173 mph), which was good enough for fourth on the grid and made him the highest qualifying BMW in the field.
Brandon Davis, of Denver, Colo., completed the top five with a time of 58.575 (94.033 mph) in his No. 43 Acura Certified Pre-Owned/RealTime Acura TSX.
Seth Thomas (BMW 325) will start sixth, followed by Charles Espenalub (Mazda 6), Peter Cunningham (Acura TSX) and Adam Pecorari (Audi A4). Jason Martinelli (BMW 325Ci) equaled his career-best qualifying effort, which also occurred at Lime Rock Park in 2005, and will start 10th.
Monday’s SCCA Pro Racing SPEED Touring Car Championship Round Three race will go green at 4:55 p.m. (EDT).
