Charlie Kimball was quickest for Ganassi in morning practice ahead of Bump Day qualifying for the Indianapolis 500, as the cars fighting for the final nine spots in the field came to the fore.
Neither of Ganassi's new second team cars made the top 24 cut yesterday, with Kimball edged out near the end of the day, and his team-mate Graham Rahal struggling with engine and fuel issues. Rahal was fourth in this morning's session. They were split by Andretti Autosport duo Danica Patrick and Marco Andretti. All four of Andretti's regular drivers are yet to qualify.
The session came to a slightly early end when Patrick Carpentier's surprise return with Dragon Racing was halted by a heavy crash. The Canadian spun the car he has taken over from Scott Speed into the wall on his 25th lap, causing substantial damage. Carpentier took some time to get out of the car after the violent impact, but was eventually able to extricate himself with the medical crews in attendance.
Paul Tracy led the way for a while early in the hour and ended up fifth for Dreyer & Reinbold. He and teammate Ana Beatriz, who was eighth this morning, are yet to make the field.
They were split by KV's Tony Kanaan (fastest of those already in the field and using the session for race practice) and Penske's Ryan Briscoe, the Australian still struggling to get speed out of his back-up car after yesterday's crash.
