IndyCar has updated its race two qualifying procedure for its double-header events ahead of this weekend's first two-race weekend at Detroit.
The system of splitting the cars into two groups that will run for 12 minutes each, including five minutes of guaranteed green flag time, has been retained. However the series has announced that the pole time will now be awarded to the best overall lap time in race two qualifying, with the remainder of the cars from the polesitter's group to occupy the odd-numbered grid positions. Previously, cars were allocated to odd and even-numbered groups based on Friday practice times.
Even-numbered starting positions will be filled by the other group, and a point will be awarded to the driver with the fastest time in each group.
Qualifying groups will continue to be determined by the times from Friday practice.
