Starting this weekend in Long Beach, IndyCar will offer an additional set of tires to entrants who complete a minimum number of laps in opening practice in an effort to allow teams to make more use of the session.
Drivers have previously limited their track time in the opening session in order to preserve their tire allocation for later in the weekend. The series has now amended the rules to allow an extra set of primary tires to entrants who complete more than five laps during first practice. Those laps include in and out-laps.
The additional tires are available for first practice only, and must be returned once the session is completed irrespective of whether they were used or not.
In another change, tire changes on the pre-race grid will no longer be permitted without approval.
Teams are allocated four sets of primary Firestones and three sets of alternates per entry for each single-race weekend, in addition to the opportunity to earn a bonus set. Eight sets of primaries, three sets of alternates and the bonus set opportunity will be made available to each entrant at the double-headers.
