Narain Karthikeyan and Karun Chandhok combined to earn Team India a place in the Race of Champions Nations' Cup on Friday.
The pair defeated Team Japan's Kazuya Oshima and Takuto Iguchi in the final of the RoC Asia in Bangkok's Rajamangala Stadium to clinch the final spot in the competition.
After winning the group stage of the event, India faced Japan in the final. Both HRT Formula 1 driver Karthikeyan and sports car racer Chandhok won their heats against the pair of Super GT competitors.
"That was a really good night and it was obviously very nice to end up on top," Chandhok said. "It wasn't as straightforward as we would have hoped as we both had our favourite cars and we ended up driving the opposite ones to what we wanted. But it worked out well in the end.
"It was a lot of fun and we really enjoyed our first experience of competing here. In the end I think we beat everyone fair and square."
While Japan and China – which fielded former IndyCar racer Ho-Pin Tung and rally driver Han Han – were both eliminated, Thailand, which finished bottom of the group, qualifies for the Nations' Cup as host. Earlier in the day, the RoC Thailand, a four-way shootout to find the nation's fastest driver, was held.
Multiple Asian Touring Car champion Charoensukawattana Nattavude beat Tin Sintrai in the final. Nattapong Horthongkum and Kiki Nana were knocked out in the semis.
