The International Formula Master championship will introduce a secondary class next year in an attempt to boost grid sizes in the series.
The current car will continue in its present form in the premier class, while current generation Tatuus-built Formula Renault 2.0 chassis will be eligible for the Formula Master Light class.
The Formula Renault Eurocup – the leading FR2.0 category – will introduce a new generation of chassis in 2010, so the 2007-09-spec version will be welcomed into IFM, with alterations to the bodywork and larger tyres the only changes.
The class will be open to drivers aged 15 and over and has an intended budget of 150,000 Euros ($220,000). Meanwhile, the main IFM car will remain unchanged with an intended budget of 200,000 Euros ($292,000).
Next season's caledar has also been unveiled, with the series dropping its Formula 1 support races in Hungary and Belgium and instead running entirely with the World Touring Car Championship at its seven European rounds.
"The goal is to make IFM available to drivers that want to demonstrate their talent in a European top-level formula with a budget lower than the Formula Renault Eurocup or national Formula 3 championships," said series manager Alessandro Alunni Bravi. "We have introduced cost saving measures and set up a budget of approximately 200,000 Euros for the entire package. During this year we sought the opinion of many talented drivers who have been unable to show their talent due to the increasing costs of all single-seater categories.
"From this we have created a cost-effective championship that will meet the expectations of young drivers who are targeting GP3 or GP2 and want to be well prepared."
