HOUSTON, Texas (Nov. 20, 2007) – The Houston Region of the Sports Car Club of America donated over 500 pounds of food and $1,100 to the Houston Food Bank this past weekend.
Racers competing in the Turkey Trot Double Regional at MSR Houston were asked to bring non-perishable food or monetary donations to help feed Houston-area families this Thanksgiving.
“Racing is a privilege we have and we wanted to do something to give back to our community.” Sydney Davis, Assistant Regional Executive of Club Racing, said.
Davis organized the food drive as a competition between each of the race groups, as well as the workers and officials. The workers and officials won the competition, thanks in major part to the contributions of Vince and Mary Hummer. The winning group will receive race photos from the 2007 Champ Car Grand Prix of Houston.
“Competition is great, but it was even better to give back to the community,” Vince Hummer said. “As soon as we heard about the food drive, we started collecting things a little at a time and it just added up.”
The region hopes to continue the philanthropy the rest of the season.
“We are all about competition on and off the track,” Davis added. “We were pleasantly surprised with the turnout. With this being the first race of the 2008 season, we felt like it was a perfect time to start something like this. In future races, we will be helping other organizations in the Houston area.”
The rest of the 2008 Houston Region race schedule will be released December 1 and will be posted on the Region’s website, www.houscca.com.
The Houston Region has been in existence for over 50 years and continues to bring more exciting and completive racing to its schedule every year.
