Honda will be the single-engine supplier for the new Moto2 category in 2010, which will eventually replace the 250cc class as MotoGP's primary feeder series from 2011.
The FIM announced at the Spanish Grand Prix in Jerez that the new bikes will be integrated into the current 250cc championship next year - similar to the way MotoGP bikes were mixed with the 500cc class in 2002 – following a meeting of the Permanent Bureau comprising FIM president Vito Ippilito and Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta.
The Honda engine will be a 600cc, four-stroke unit, and is expected to produce 'over 150bhp' according to the statement.
Though it has not been confirmed, it is considered likely that European-based Honda specialist tuner Ten Kate will be given the contract to prepare the motors for the new open-chassis formula.
Speculation also suggests that the tyre regulations may remain free to allow open competition between manufacturers, with Michelin known to be showing interest in building tyres for the series.
