Simon Pagenaud gave Highcroft HPD another pole as the American Le Mans Series resumed after its Le Mans 24 Hours break at Miller Motorsports Park.
In the early stages of the prototype session, the Drayson Lola and Dyson Lola-Mazda had swapped provisional pole, with the CytoSport Porsche right behind them - all three covered by 0.062sec. But Highcroft had chosen to hold back until the final stages, expecting track conditions to get quicker late on. Pagenaud duly delivered a blistering series of ever faster laps that took him straight onto pole and then stretch the gap from the competition. His final pole margin was just over half a second.
Jonny Cocker kept Drayson in second, ahead of Dyson, CytoSport and the Intersport Lola. Gunner Jeanette fended off Level 5's Christophe Bouchut to give his Green Earth Gunnar team the LMPC pole in seventh overall.
Ferrari claimed a one-two-three in GT qualifying, although with the top nine cars covered by just 0.8sec, it could not claim to be dominant. Risi's two cars took first and third, with Gianmaria Bruno on class pole by 0.062sec over Johannes van Overbeek, who produced a great lap in the No. 01 Extreme Speed Ferrari. Toni Vilander was third in the additional No. 61 Risi Ferrari which he will share with ALMS debutant Giancarlo Fisichella. The No. 45 Flying Lizard Porsche, the BMWs and the Corvettes were next up.
Jeroen Bleekemolen gave Black Swan Racing the GTC pole, with a 0.3sec gap back to Orbit's Bryce Miller and Alex Job's Luis Diaz, who were only 0.001sec apart.
