MONTEREY, CALIF. (May 2, 2004) - Justin Hall, of Davis, Calif., won Round Four of the Mazdaspeed Miata Cup Presented by Hankook Pacific Tour at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Completing the top three was Ken Dobson, of Sonoma, Calif., and Bobby Carter, of Stockton, Calif.- 30 -
Getting underway midday Sunday, the field went three-wide at the start of the second race of the doubleheader at Laguna Seca. As several drivers battled for position, Carter took the lead exiting turn one. At the conclusion of the opening lap of the 2.238-mile road course, Carter led, followed closely by Dobson and Hall.
Running side-by-side down the front straight, Dobson took the lead in turn one on lap two. As Dobson pulled out a small lead, the battle for second through fourth heated up. For the next few laps, several cars swapped position, with Dobson continuing to lead.
By the midway point of the race, the lead foursome of Dobson, Hall, Carter and Steve Ott had built a sizeable gap on the rest of the field. Running nose-to-tail the leaders extended the gap, while looking for chances to pass. Despite pulling out to pass several times the running order did not change for four laps.
At the conclusion of lap 10, Ott got inside Hall and passed for position, moving into third place. Using a great draft, Hall passed Dobson in turn one on lap 17 to take lead, while Ott passed Carter to move into third, having lost the position on the previous lap. After running side-by-side in turn one, Carter passed Ott in turn two to take third place on lap 18. Battling all the way to the checkered flag, Hall captured the win by 0.263-second, ahead of Dobson and Carter.
“It was a battle out there today,” Hall said. “I wanted to work with Ken [Dobson] at the start to build a gap. At the end, we had a great race.”
“That was a fun drive in the park,” Dobson said. “Justin [Hall] drove a great race and he deserved the win.”
“It was a lot tougher than yesterday,” Carter said. “It was pretty physical out there, but I really enjoyed battling Steve [Ott] out there.”
Completing the top-five is Ott, of Brighton, Colo., who started third and Jon Davies, of Hood River, Ore., who started sixth.
