International GT supremo Stephane Ratel has confirmed plans to banish the GT1 class from the Spa 24 Hours next year, and give GT2 center stage.
Speaking at Spa today, Ratel confirmed that the 2010 Belgian enduro would be part of the planned 2010 European GT2 Championship. GT3 and GT4 cars will also be eligible, while the new GT1 World Championship will have two, separate one-hour races at the meeting.
Ratel said: "We think this way we can have a bigger grid in the Spa 24 Hours and help contain costs for the first year of the GT1 World Championship."
He also expects Aston Martin and Chevrolet to appear in the GT2 series to compete against the established cars of Porsche and Ferrari.
This year's 24 Hours, which starts tomorrow afternoon, has attracted 37 cars, 13 in the GT2 category.
