Jamie Green hopes that resurfacing work at Valencia will make qualifying for this weekend's DTM race far less of a lottery than in the past.
Previously, the amount of grip available on the track was altered significantly by smaller changes in temperature than most other circuits.
During qualifying last year a number of drivers were caught out when the final two minutes of Q2 - usually the fastest part of the session - proved significantly slower due to a slight shift in the amount of cloud cover over the circuit.
Green, who failed to make Q3 at the Spanish track last year, is hopeful that a more conventional session will follow as a result of the work.
"In the past, the surface at Valencia was extremely temperature dependent, which made it important to time your lap so that you were out on track when it was at its fastest," he said.
"I'm curious to see how the new Tarmac behaves and whether the scenario has since changed."
Schnitzer Motorsport boss Charly Lamm's lead driver Bruno Spengler is just 11 points behind championship leader Gary Paffett, with 50 still available from the final two races.
Despite his team having tested extensively at Valencia earlier in 2012, he believes that the new surface will leave Spengler his teammate Dirk Werner largely starting from scratch this weekend.
"We have experience of Valencia through testing the BMW M3 DTM there," Lamm said.
"However, the surface of the track has been completely relayed since then, meaning we will have a lot to learn there again."
