SPEED.com reports that the Grand-Am Rolex Series will join the Sprint Cup Series on the program for the 2012 Brickyard 400 weekend at Indianapolis. Grand-Am tested its Daytona Prototype cars on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course in 2009, and SPEED reports that plans are now in place for a three-hour race to be run for the Grand-Am cars on the same weekend as NASCAR (which owns the Grand-Am series). The event would mark the first time the road course and oval have been utilized on the same race weekend at Indianapolis, although NASCAR and Grand-Am have raced jointly in the past at Daytona's summer race weekend.

The road course, which was originally built to accommodate Formula 1, has been used since the departure of the USGP at Indy for MotoGP motorcycle racing. The track is currently being repaved in preparation for this year's Red Bull GP MotoGP event, scheduled for Aug. 28. MotoGP has announced it will race at Austin's new Circuit of the Americas next year as well as Monterey's Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, but IMS officials insist they want to keep their MotoGP event, too.
