Sunday morning at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca during the Ferrari Racing Days meeting, Ferrari factory F1 reserve driver Marc Gene set a new unofficial track record in the Ferrari F2003GA at 1:05.78, beating the previous unofficial best of 1:05.88 set by Sebastien Bourdais in a Panoz DP01-Cosworth Champ Car during preseason testing in 2007. The ex-Rubens Barrichello racer is owned by Bud Moeller.
Gene's Ferrari isn't the first Formula 1 car to turn laps at the Monterey, Calif. facility – Ricardo Zonta has also ran at Mazda Raceway in a Toyota F1 car in 2006, setting a then-unofficial lap record of 1:06.309 around the 2.328-mile Monterey, Calif., road course.
