Dario Franchitti topped a delayed opening practice session for this weekend's IndyCar race at Texas Motor Speedway.

Franchitti set the marker with a best lap of 24.3941s (214.724mph) to put him just ahead of Target Chip Ganassi Racing teammate Scott Dixon, who was 0.0512sec off the Scot's pace.

Josef Newgarden (Sarah Fisher Hartman) and Alex Tagliani (Bryan Herta Autosport) completed a Honda 1-2-3-4 for the session, with KV Racing's Tony Kanaan quickest of the Chevrolet-powered runners with a 213.600mph lap.

The cars were just over an hour late in taking to the track to allow time for sections left damp from recent rain to be dried out, but once it got underway, the session ran uninterrupted save for a couple of brief spells under yellow for track inspections.

The delay has forced a minor change to the day's schedule, with qualifying now penciled in for 4 p.m. local time. The evening practice session will remain at its original time of 6:45 p.m.
