TOPEKA, Kan. (Jan. 14, 2008) – Two of the largest fields at the 2007 SCCA National Championship Runoffs will hit the small screen Wednesday, Jan. 16, on SPEED.
At noon (EST), 43 Formula Vees take the green flag on SPEED. Polesitter Michael Varacins gets a great start in his Vortech and breaks away to a lead of more than two seconds. Lapped traffic comes into play as defending FV Champion Steve Oseth begins to chip away at Varacins’ lead. With two laps to go, Varacins has less than a second on Oseth’s Speed Sport machine and it becomes clear that this race will be decided on the final lap.
At 1 p.m., defending Champion Mike Miserendino leads 39 Spec Racer Fords to the start line. Unfortunately, several cars in the field won’t even make it that far in this race. As Miserendino screams into Turn One, several cars get together on the front straight, sending some airborne and leaving three stranded on course. After one lap of caution, the field is brought into the pit lane so officials can clear the scene faster. When the race resumes with a single-file restart, Miserendino once again rockets away from the field. With Brian Schofield, Jordon Gore and John Black all battling behind him, it seems unlikely that anyone will be able to stop Miserendino from claiming his second-consecutive SRF Championship.
If you miss them the first time, the FV and SRF races will re-air on Wednesday, Jan. 23, at 3 and 4 a.m., respectively.
