Mass penalties hand Vietoris F3 victory

Christian Vietoris took a surprise victory in the second Formula 3 Euro Series race of the Oschersleben weekend after all six drivers ahead of him had 30 seconds added to their race times. The Mucke Motorsport driver was only seventh on the road at the chequered flag, but he was classified the winner after 21 of the 23 drivers still running were penalised for setting personal best times through the first sector while yellow flags were out. The drivers who were given a time penalty included all of those ahead of Vietoris - Stefano Coletti (who took a dominant win on the road), Mika Maki, Roberto Merhi, Jules Bianchi and Jean Karl Vernay.
 

Giovanardi wins bruising BTCC race one

Vauxhall's Fabrizio Giovanardi gave his chances of another British Touring Car title a boost by winning an incident-packed first race at Snetterton. Mat Jackson came through to second in the Silverline Chevrolet, with Paul O'Neill a delighted third in his Tech-Speed Honda Integra. Front row starters Jason Plato and Colin Turkington both fell out of victory contention on a bruising opening lap.

Corinthians leads way in Superleague practice

Ex-Formula 1 racer Antonio Pizzonia set the fastest time in free practice for round three of Superleague Formula at Donington Park, but series returnee squad Sevilla rivalled him as being the most consistent across the three sessions. All running so far has been rain-affected, with the opening 30-minute session offering the driest weather conditions. Fauzy quickest in Portimao F-Renault practice

Fairuz Fauzy set the fastest time in practice for round seven of the Formula Renault 3.5 series at Portimao on Friday morning. The Malaysian's 1m32.166s today was 0.5s faster than Le Mans pole-winner Jon Lancaster, while Oliver Turvey was third for Carlin Motorsport after being forced to change an engine after Thursday's opening collective test. Team-mate Jaime Alguersuari also opted for a fresh engine today, and the ensuing restricted running left the Formula 1 racer in unfamiliar ground in 23rd.

The Brazilian T-Sport driver had finished sixth on the road but was penalised for overshooting his grid position as he lined up for the start of the race. British Formula 3 championship leader Daniel Ricciardo will make his Formula Renault 3.5 debut with Tech 1 Racing at Portimao next month. The Australian Carlin Motorsport driver will substitute for fellow Red Bull Junior Brendon Hartley, who is on Formula 3 Euro Series duty with Carlin at Oschersleben. "It's really Red Bull's decision," Ricciardo told AUTOSPORT.
 

Toro Rosso expects Alguersuari to shine

Scuderia Toro Rosso team principal Franz Tost has hit back at critics who say Jaime Alguersuari is too young to be in Formula 1. Alguersuari is set to become the youngest driver to start an F1 race this weekend, but his promotion into Toro Rosso has caused controversy, with Mark Webber and Felipe Massa saying he should not have been given the chance yet. However, Tost has jumped to Alguersuari's defence - and said he thinks the youngster will have a bright future in F1 as he is groomed for eventual promotion to Red Bull Racing.
 

British F3: Buzaid claims first pole at Spa

Adriano Buzaid claimed his and T-Sport's maiden British Formula 3 pole position by topping the times during a sodden second qualifying session at Spa this morning. The track dried slowly throughout the session and, after T-Sport had traded times with leading F3 Euro Series squad ART in the early part of qualifying, Brazilian racer Buzaid leapt to the top permanently with eight minutes of the half-hour session to run. The ex-Formula Renault UK race winner, who also topped the times during wet first practice yesterday, set several laps good enough for pole during the latter part of the session and was particularly rapid through the long middle sector
