The Spaniard, who won at Brno earlier this year, squeezed out his nearest title rival Robert Wickens by just 0.028s. "It's the first time i've driven here and it was a fantastic experience," said Soucek.
 

Five drivers penalized for Brands F2 race one

Five drivers have been given grid penalties for today's first Formula 2 race at Brands Hatch for exceeding the limit of the track at Paddock Hill Bend. Sebastian Hohenthal, who qualified third, and Jack Clarke, 14th, received five-place penalties from the race stewards after being black-flagged during the session Mikhail Aleshin (fifth), Mirko Bortolotti (ninth) and Tobias Hegewald (18th) had their times disqualified and will start from the back of the grid for not respecting the black flags they were shown.

The Spaniard only started the race sixth but was in contention for the lead by the end of a hectic opening lap. Qualifying was broken up by a red flag when Alex Brundle went off with seven minutes remaining, giving everyone one more shot at pole on new tyres. Andy Soucek, Mirko Bortolotti and Mikhail Aleshin each had a spell at the top before Surtees posted a 1m48.006s with two minutes remaining.
