IndyCar fans in Southern California who have been missing out on the unique appeal of superspeedway oval racing for the past six years now have a firm date to look forward to – Sept. 15, 2012. That's when the IZOD IndyCar Series will return to Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif. The International Speedway Corp.-owned facility announced Tuesday that its revived event, which was first announced without a specified date back in July, will run under the lights that Saturday night. It will be the first IndyCar night race at the facility, which previously has only run NASCAR events under the lights.
The length of the race and start time have yet to be determined, but speedway officials indicated they expect to make an announcement about those details shortly.
The D-shaped, 2.0-mile oval, previously known as California Speedway, hosted both CART and Indy Racing League IndyCar events from its opening in 1997 through 2005. One of the highlights of the track's open-wheel history occurred on Oct. 28, 2000, when Gil de Ferran set the track record for fastest lap at 241.426mph during qualifying – a world speed record for the fastest lap of a closed course – with his Team Penske Reynard-Honda (ABOVE).
Tickets for the event will go on sale on Sept. 12, 2011. Ticket pricing is as follows: Reserved Club area $60; Reserved $50; General Admission $30; children 12 and under free in General Admission with Lefty's Kids Club membership and camping packages available from $255 to $330.
