Ferrari says it must keep focused on its own performance in Abu Dhabi, rather than worry about what Red Bull Racing is doing, if it is to help Fernando Alonso win the World Championship.
Alonso needs just a second place finish in the season finale to guarantee himself the crown, and could finish lower down if nearest rival Mark Webber does not win. Although there are a number of scenarios that could unfold this weekend, Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali says his team must keep it simple and not get lost in the mathematics of the situation.
"We will not change our approach," said Domenicali after seeing Sebastian Vettel's victory in Brazil haul the German into real title contention. "We need to be focused on our side. We don't have to make very difficult calculations. We know that if we are in between the two Red Bulls, it is fine, but apart from that we have to make sure that we are fast, do a perfect qualifying and then we need to do the best we can.
"And we will need to wait until the last meter, because reliability is a big point that everyone will be worried about, not only with the engine but with everything. It will be a very long race in Abu Dhabi."
He added: "For sure Red Bull are stronger because they have two drivers instead of one, so they are in a better position in some respects, but we have to look inside not what the others are doing. We have to do the fastest race, the fastest qualifying and who will win will deserve the championship from hell."
When asked if he felt the performance of the car would be good enough to allow Ferrari to win in Abu Dhabi, Domenicali said: "We will try. It is for sure something we need to do because if we win it is easy. No calculation.
"But we know the Red Bull is very strong – it was very strong last year, although last year on our side we were in a different scenario as we had stopped development. I think it will be very challenging."
