Ferrari drivers Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa say it is still impossible to predict the pecking order following Friday practice for the Bahrain GP.
Force India's Adrian Sutil topped the first session while Nico Rosberg put his Mercedes on top of the times in the afternoon. Alonso was second in the morning but ninth in the afternoon as he prepared for Sunday's race.
The Spanish driver said it was still impossible to know who has the quickest car.
"No idea. I think it's still a complete unknown for everybody," said Alonso. "For sure the four big teams, any of them can be quick tomorrow, can be on pole.
"I'm sure there will be some surprises like Force India that it seems very quick in these type of circuits, and some negative surprises with some people that are not so quick. In our expectations, we still hope to be in strong form in qualifying and hopefully get a good position for the race."
Teammate Massa agreed that the picture would not be clear until after tomorrow's qualifying.
"I think it's really impossible to answer because we didn't try qualifying today," he said. "We saw some cars were pretty quick today. Anyway, I hope tomorrow we are fighting for pole position, but it's quite difficult to answer now."
Alonso said we was pleased with his day's work after what he labeled as a normal Friday.
"It was fine," he said. "We tried to do some tire work to try to understand the two types of tires. It was the first day we ran the car in hot conditions so there were some things to evaluate and to make sure the car is running OK for Sunday. So a normal Friday to make sure we are well prepared for qualifying."
He added: "More or less I think we are in a position to attack now 100 percent. We are confident with the car. We need to make some changes overnight to improve the grip a bit. But it was a very normal Friday, with nothing wrong."
