The February issue of SportsCar magazine – the second issue following the official magazine of the Sports Car Club of America's radical new redesign – is now mailing to SCCA members, who will find plenty inside to stoke the fire for the season of racing ahead.
"The cover feature concentrates on what SCCA competitors will be facing during the 2013 season," explains SportsCar Editor Phillip Royle. "While not everything is changing within the SCCA, all facets of competition within the club are seeing either new rules or a new series heading into the New Year. From Club Racing's U.S. Majors Tour to Solo's Tire Rack Match Tour to RoadRally's championship points structure revamp and new rules allowances in RallyCross, SCCA competitors should expect to face new and exciting changes in the coming year."
Also featured in this issue is an exploration of SCCA Club Racing's new Touring class.
"SCCA's Showroom Stock categories have supplied more than three decades of spectacular amateur racing. For 2013, the Showroom Stock category is being combined with the Touring category, which has offered amazing racing in its own right," Royle continues. "Combined with the new rules for Touring 1, which allow for wild wings and bodywork on cars like Corvettes and Vipers, you have a category that will undoubtedly live up to its heritage."
Another notable feature in this issue is an interview with SCCA Pro Racing Pirelli World Challenge GT Champion Johnny O'Connell, where he reveals racing secrets he has learned while collecting a number of impressive professional racing titles. For example:
"I had a very good coach/driving instructor when I was young,” says O'Connell. “At [Mazda Raceway] Laguna Seca, he asked me, ‘What is your favorite corner?' It was the old Turn 7, now Turn 9. I loved that corner. Then he asked me which is my worst corner and I said Turn 4 [now Turn 6]. Hated it. Miserable corner. He said, ‘Make Turn 4 your favorite. Make it be that part of the racetrack that you look forward to going to every lap.'
“It was neat, because he was so in my head. Before, it would be, ‘Exit Turn 3, coming up to 4 – crap, crap, crap.' But the change in mindset was one of the best coaching moments I ever had.”
All of this is on top of the fact that the February 2013 issue is poly-bagged with SportsCar's 2013 calendar. The 2013 calendar's theme is “Heroes of the SCCA,” and features the likes of Mark Donohue, Dave Weitzenhof, Kent Prather, Brianne Corn, and many more.
