Philipp Eng took his first Formula 2 pole position at Brands Hatch this afternoon after an exceptionally close qualifying session.
The Austrian took the top spot away from Sebastian Hohenthal in the final 10 minutes, after the Swede had shown his first signs of front running form this season in the early part of the session.
Eng then survived a late onslaught of fastest times as Hohenthal and Andy Soucek also broke into the 1m17.4s, but his earlier effort was just fast enough to clinch pole as the top three were covered by 0.017sec.
Henry Surtees set the fourth-quickest time, with Mikhail Aleshin fifth and Kazim Vasiliauskas sixth. Robert Wickens and Julien Jousse, who lie second and third in the standings behind Soucek, will fill row four for Saturday's first race, with Mirko Bortolotti and Milos Pavlovic completing the top 10.
Hohenthal, Bortolotti, Tobias Hegewald and Jack Clarke received warnings during the session for failing to respect the track limits.
