The GP2 Series feature race at Monza has been delayed after a downpour hit the Italian circuit.

Just an hour after the Formula 1 qualifying session had taken place in perfect conditions, the rain struck with the GP2 field already formed up on the grid. The precipitation initially hit at the far side of the track, leaving the Lesmo area awash, before spreading to the rest of the venue.

The rain has now relented slightly, although there remains a substantial amount of standing water around the circuit. A safety car start appears likely when the race eventually gets underway.

The event could see points leader Nico Hulkenberg crowned as champion, although the ART driver's title rival Vitaly Petrov kept his hopes alive by claiming pole position yesterday.
