A trio of series returnees led Star Mazda's first day of spring training at Barber Motorsports Park. Juncos Racing teammates Connor De Phillippi and Martin Scuncio split Andretti Autosport's Sage Karam on day one.
De Phillippi, the defending series runner-up, netted a lap a full eight-tenths quicker than Karam, 1:20.607 to 1:21.432 around the 2.38-mile circuit. Scuncio in third was the only other driver within one second. De Phillippi's lap broke the old track record of 1:21.166 by more than half a second.
Two of the Team Pelfrey drivers, Jack Hawksworth and 2011 USF2000 champion Petri Suvanto, completed the top five runners.
Seventeen of the 21 drivers entered for the test took times on Monday.
