Two-time Champ Car champion and former Formula 1 team boss Gil de Ferran has become an ambassador for Formula E. The Brazilian will become an official spokesperson for the series, particularly in North America.
"Electric vehicles are undoubtedly playing an increasing role in the transportation landscape worldwide and as such, electric car racing will provide the perfect platform to help accelerate the development of relevant technologies and showcase the potential in an exciting way," said de Ferran. "The FIA Formula E Championship is the leading global initiative in electric car racing and I am thrilled and honored to be able to lend my expertise to this exciting and ground breaking endeavour."
De Ferran won back-to-back Champ Car titles with Penske in 2000-'01 before following the team to what was then the Indy Racing League, where he won the Indianapolis 500 in 2003.
He retired at the end of that season and had a spell running Honda's F1 team before making a comeback as an owner/driver in the American Le Mans Series with Honda's Acura program The de Ferran team also briefly fielded an IndyCar squad.
Formula E is due to commence in September 2014. The electric series will race exclusively on city street tracks, including Las Vegas in America and Rio de Janeiro in de Ferran's Brazilian homeland.
Ex-F1 driver Lucas di Grassi is already working with Formula E as a test driver and ambassador.
