Ryan Dalziel and Jack Baldwin set fast laps in the GT and GTS classes, respectively, in the opening practice session of the St. Petersburg Sports Car Challenge Presented by StopTech in St. Petersburg, Fla in support of the IndyCar St. Petersburg Grand Prix.
Veteran road-racer Dalziel's lap of 1:15.904 (85.371 mph), in the No. 46 Privacy Star/ENTRUST Porsche 911 GT3 entry, was less than a second off the track qualifying record of 1:15.071 (86.318 mph) set by Patrick Long in 2011, also driving the No. 46 TruSpeed Porsche.
Alex Figge, of Denver, Co., was second-fastest in the session, clocking a 1:15.964 (85.303 mph) in the No. 9 K-Pax Racing Volvo S60.
The third-fastest time of session one was turned in by Mike Skeen, of Charlotte, NC. Skeen clocked a time of 1:16.159 (85.085 mph), driving the No. 2 Hawk Performance Nissan GT-R.
The Cadillac Racing teammates of Johnny O'Connell, of Flowery Branch, Ga., and Andy Pilgrim, of Boca Raton, Fla., were fourth and fifth respectively. 2012 GT champion O'Connell, driving the No. 3 Cadillac Racing Cadillac CTS-V.R set a best time of 1:16.181 (85.060 mph). Pilgrim, in the No. 8 Cadillac Racing Cadillac CTS-V.R set a 1:16.254 (84.979 mph).
Baldwin, driving the No. 73 Motul/Stop Tech/Invoice Prep Porsche Cayman S, set the fast lap in GTS with a 1:21.381 (79.625 mph). The time was quicker than the qualifying record of 1:21.936 (79.086 mph) set by Eric Foss in 2011.
Milwaukee, Wis.-native Peter Cunningham, driving the No. 42 Acura/HPD/RealTime Racing Acura TSX, clicked-off a time of 1:21.815 (79.203 mph). That was enough to put his RealTime racing entry into second place in the GTS class.
Kevin Gleason, of Johnstown, Pa., put in a time of 1:22.182 (78.849 mph) in his No. 16 Napleton Porsche Porsche Cayman S. That put him 0.801 seconds behind Baldwin.
San Diego resident Nick Esayian, Cunninghan's teammate, set the fourth fastest time in GTS in his No. 34 Acura/HPD/RealTime Racing Acura TSX. His best time was a 1:22.637 (78.415 mph).
Lou Gigliotti, of Dallas, starts his return to Pirelli World Challenge competition by setting the fifth fastest time of practice session one in the GTS class with a 1:22.714 (78.342 mph). Gigliotti is piloting the No. 28 LG Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro this weekend.
The cars of the Pirelli World Challenge will take the track, again, later Friday for Practice Sesssion Two. The 30-minute session is scheduled to begin at 12:55 pm (EDT) followed by qualifying at 5:10 pm (EDT).
