America's Conor Daly is in Barcelona to have his first test in a GP2 car over the next two days, March 5-6. The test came about as the result of a surprise call to Daly from German-based Hilmer Motorsport, which is still looking to fill both of its seats for the upcoming season.
"This was totally unexpected," said Daly. "I was in England and within a day the deal was talked about by The KINC agency and I was on a plane. I'm very much looking forward to the experience. I know the engineers and the team have assembled some very experienced people. The weather forecast is not great, but I will still learn a lot."
Daly's GP3 deal for the season has not come together as expected yet and therefore the veteran of both U.S. and European open-wheel ladder series says he is presently looking at all options for the upcoming season.
Hilmer Motorsport is a new team to the GP2 Series this year, having recently purchased the assets of Ocean Technology. The team is owned and operated by Franz Hilmer who also owns Formtech GmbH, a supplier for several Formula 1 teams. In the recent series test in Jerez, it topped the time sheets on both days.
