Jonny Cocker and Drayson Racing took their second straight American Le Mans Series pole with another dominant performance at Elkhart Lake.
The British driver was the only man below 1m50s as he set a 1m49.554s lap in the Lola-Judd before the session was half over, putting him 1.3 seconds clear of Guy Smith in the Lexington-winning Dyson Lola-Mazda. The result made Cocker the first man to take two poles in the 2010 ALMS season.
Back after missing Lexington due to a testing crash, CytoSport will start third, with Klaus Graf taking qualifying duties before sharing the Porsche with super-sub Timo Bernhard in the race due to team boss Greg Pickett's back injury.
Johnny Mowlem made a strong debut in the Autocon Lola-AER to take fourth – ahead of the points-leading Highcroft HPD, which could not match the LMP1-based cars ahead in qualifying trim and was 2.5sec off the pace. Intersport missed the session due to engine problems in practice.
There was a commanding pole margin in LMPC too, where recent category convert Luis Diaz was on top by 1.125s for PR1/Mathiasen.
The Corvettes claimed a 1-2 in a GT qualifying session interrupted by a red flag after Andy Lally crashed TRG's GTC Porsche. Oliver Gavin had already established himself on class pole ahead of teammate Jan Magnussen before the stoppage, with Pierre Kaffer putting the No. 61 Risi Ferrari third. His teammate Jaime Melo did not manage to get a lap in early though, and could only salvage seventh when the session resumed. The championship-leading Flying Lizard Porsche was fourth.
Black Swan's Jeroen Bleekemelon stormed to yet another GTC pole, while Lally's pre-crash time was good enough to hold second.
