TOPEKA, Kan. (Nov. 23, 2004) – The most dramatic shift in SCCA Club Racing class structure since the introduction of Touring will begin in 2005, with GT-4 and GT-5 combining, new classes in development and a Regional class going National in 2006.
In the January 2005 issue of FasTrack, released on www.scca.com Monday, the final specifications for the new GT Lite class were announced in a Club Racing Technical Bulletin. GT Lite begins competition in 2005 as the combination of cars that competed in GT-4 and GT-5 in the 2004 season. The consolidation, which was prompted by low participation numbers and similar class rules, brings the total number of SCCA National Classes to 23 for the 2005 season—one less than what the Club Racing National program has had since 1998, when Touring 1 was added.
SCCA Club Racing will return to 24 National classes in 2006, with the addition of the popular Spec Miata to the docket. Spec Miata has been an “official” regional class for just one season at this point, but has been a class run at the Region level for a number of years. The common set of rules adopted into the SCCA Club Racing General Competition Rules (GCR) for the 2004 season, allowed Spec Miata to be a recognized Regional class for two years prior to its National status in 2006—a rule specified in the GCR.
Additional changes could be on the horizon as well, with the Club Racing Board working on rules packages for new classes in both the Touring and Production categories, designed to include more current-model, mass-produced cars.
The 2005 SCCA Club Racing National schedule actually starts December 4-5, with a Southern Pacific Division race at Phoenix International Raceway.
