Eddie Cheever has signed up to join Stefan Johansson and Mark Blundell on the United Autosports driver roster for this year's Spa 24 Hours. The 52-year-old former grand prix driver and Indy 500 winner will share a GT3 Audi R8 with Blundell and team owners Zak Brown and Richard Dean, while Johansson will line up in the team's sister car.
"Having spent a number of years of my career racing sports cars, I am very interested to drive a latest GT3 machine at Spa," said Cheever, who still holds the record for the Indy 500's fastest lap (236.103mph in 1996). "I always considered Le Mans to be the most dangerous race I did every year when the Mulsanne Straight had no chicanes. The only other 24-hour event I've raced in is Daytona, the last time being three years ago – which was actually my last race. But the lure of racing at Spa again, in a 24-hour race, was too much of a good thing to turn down. I'm really looking forward to the experience."
Johansson and Cheever both tested the Audi R8 for the first time at Snetterton on Tuesday, with Blundell testing for the second time after an initial run on Silverstone's Stowe circuit last month.
