Mechanical failure caused the Spa 24 Hours-leading BMW to crash in the final hour earlier today, handing victory to Porsche.

Dirk Werner was in control of the race when he was pitched off at Les Combes with only 40 minutes to go. He touched the barriers before returning to the pits for repairs, dropping the car to third.

"I was already in safe mode - not using the curbs - and suddenly something in the steering broke," said Werner, who was sharing the #79 BMW M3 with Dirk Muller and Dirk Adorf.

"The car was really fantastic, especially in the dry, and we were faster than our competition. It's very disappointing."

The car still won the GT National class, but the off allowed BMS Scuderia Italia and IMSA Performance to score a one-two for Porsche.
