The first race of the SCCA Pro Racing SIRIUS Satellite Radio Mazda MX-5 Cup presented by Hankook proved to be a full on-track race spectacle with exciting lead changes and on track action. It was a battle of Miata engines all perfectly matched to create a level playing field to showcase driver talent over big budgets.
The BSI team had a great showing at the first event of the year, placing two cars in the top-two spots. Polesetter Chip Herr, in the No. 59 Sports Car Revolution/Mazdaspeed Mazda MX-5 prepped by team BSI, won the inaugural SCCA Pro Racing event. Todd Buras in the No. 56 BSI Racing/Krispy Kreme
Miaita finished second.
The two teammates worked together and overcame the competition. Herr, not only placed first in the race, but also won the Hawk Hot Lap with a lap time of 1:44. 281, the fastest lap turned on track.
"It was hard charging in the car," Herr said. "All the drivers had the same car and it came down to driver talent and car setup. I was really happy with the Hankook Tires, they lasted the entire 45 minutes. They were really consistent and always came back."
Todd Buras began the race in 19th position, and overcame 17 spots to win the Sunoco Hard Charger Award.
"I didn't know what to expect," said Buras, referring to his No. 56 Miata.
Buras had an on track collision during the qualifying session on Saturday and nearly totaled the car. The BSI Racing crew put in over 8 hours of nonstop work on the No. 56 car ready in order to have it ready for Sunday morning.
"I got to the leaders in front of me and we were taking the turns two by two," Buras said. "I started off at the back of the pack. It was good to have the yellow flag at the start of the race."
BSI Racing had a good showing with four Miatas in total finishing the inaugural event. The next race in the MX-5 Cup Series will be at Lime Rock Park on May 29.
BSI Racing can arrange arrive-and-drive rentals and ownership programs in a variety of different types of race cars, including MX-5 Cup Miatas as well as Improved Touring Volkswagens.
