ESPN broadcaster Bob Griese has been suspended by the network one week for an on-air remark he made about NASCAR driver Juan Pablo Montoya.
During ESPN's broadcast of the Minnesota-Ohio State college football game last Saturday, a graphic was shown listing the top five drivers in the Chase for the Sprint Cup, as part of a promo for ABC/ESPN's NASCAR coverage. When analyst Chris Spielman asked where was Montoya, who is Colombian, Griese replied, “Out having a taco.”
Griese, a NFL Hall of Fame quarterback prior to his broadcasting career, apologized for the remark a few minutes later, but was sidelined for this week nevertheless. ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz said ESPN has spoken to Griese and “he understands the comment was inappropriate.” Krulewitz said Griese would not be working a game this weekend.
