Wayne Boyd claimed a sensational first British F3 victory in a frenetic race two at Donington Park this afternoon.

The race began in dry conditions and all drivers started on slicks, but rain fell steadily and, after an early safety car period, conditions became highly treacherous. Reigning British Formula Ford champion Boyd began in a lowly ninth and, after taking to the grass at the start, lay 10th when the safety car was despatched on lap six while Victor Garcia's stricken Fortec car was extracted from the Coppice gravel trap.

With all tire temperature gone and the rain falling ever harder as racing resumed, Boyd began a charge that would carry him to his first win via several swashbuckling moves and a round the outside pass on long-time leader Renger van der Zande (Hitech) at Redgate with five laps to run.

"It was a great race and the car was mega," said winner Boyd, who at times lapped 1.5s quicker than any of his rivals.

Boyd's T-Sport teammate Adriano Buzaid completed the squad's maiden 1-2 finish by taking second spot. The Brazilian started from the front row, but ran third for much of the latter part of the race and inherited second when van der Zande backed off on the final lap, having failed to serve an apparent drive-through penalty.

The Dutchman was involved in an early-race incident with championship leader Daniel Ricciardo that spun the pole-sitting Australian through 720 degrees at Coppice and limited the Carlin racer to a frustrated run to sixth, which became fifth when van der Zande was hit with a time penalty post-race.

The Dutchman's Hitech teammate Walter Grubmuller completed the podium to further erode Ricciardo's points lead, while Carlos Huertas (Double R) enjoyed another strong run to fourth.

Ricciardo's Carlin teammate Henry Arundel rounded out the top six, while Daniel McKenzie (Fortec) completed a National Class double in 12th overall.
