Sam Bird will start tomorrow's GP2 Series feature race in Hungary from pole position after a stewards' investigation cleared the ART driver of having set his best lap under yellows.
The Briton set his pole time late in the session just as marshals were finishing removing Jerome d'Ambrosio's stranded car from the run-off area at the final corner. Yellow flags had been out since the Belgian spun and the affected section of the track was just returning to green when Bird came through, creating confusion over whether the lap would be allowed to stand.
The stewards' declaration that the lap was indeed legal confirms that Bird will start from pole for the first time in his GP2 career, with reigning GP2 Asia Series champion Davide Valsecchi of iSport alongside him on the front row.
