Germany's Rhein-Zeitung reported Wednesday that Nurburgring GmbH, the company that currently runs the 14-mile Nordschliefe circuit and former German Grand Prix venue, is facing bankruptcy. The track, long relished by sports car afficionados as a toll road since its days as an F1 track, is expected to remain open while a buyer is sought for the company's other assets, which include a hotel, amusement park and shopping center.

The bankruptcy was evicdently forced when the track's owners' requests for additional funding from the European Union were turned down. According to the Rhein-Zeitung report, Nurburgring GmbH will remain in operation for the rest of the year, but its future beyond that will likely be decided by bankruptcy administrators.
