Auto Club Speedway has been confirmed, officially, as the season finale for the 2012 IZOD IndyCar Series. The night race on Sept. 15 will mark the end of the 16-race schedule. It marks the first time the series has raced at the Fontana, Calif., facility since 2005.
Fontana, when it was known as California Speedway, has served as the season-ender for IndyCar six times before. CART ended its season there from 1997 through 2001, with the IndyCar Series ending its 2005 season there.
Rumors had abounded that a street race in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., might end the season, but the time needed to get the event up-and-running and a track outlined would take longer than the seven or eight months between now and the end of the season.
