One of the most persistent requests from IndyCar fans to management has been for a return of the category to Road America, the picturesque Wisconsin road course that featured prominently in the old CART series. Although the track has held periodic discussions with IndyCar about a return of major league open-wheel racing to the Elkhart Lake venue, the parties have been unable to reach a deal. However, prospects appear to be brighter again, as Road America president George Bruggenthiess told SPEED's Robin Miller that he has held discussions with IndyCar about a 2014 date.
“I've reached out to IndyCar and had a meeting with [Hulman & Co. CEO] Mark Miles back in April at Long Beach and we'd like to bring Indy cars back,” said Bruggenthiess said. "I know he'd like to end the season around Labor Day and we'd be fine with a September race.”
Road America hosted CART and Champ Car events between 1982 and 2007, but was left off the combined schedule following unification of Champ Car and the Indy Racing League.
